  • A commmunity-based cybercafé and learning centre that has grown out of a fish and chip shop. It is a base for a huge range of learning and training-based activities and is focus for trying to maintain a sense of community in the face of economic problems.

  • A network of online groups that now connects over 1.2 million people in their local area. Run entirely by volunteers it enables people to reuse and recycle and helps build a sense of community.

The George Pub Doddington and Cambridgeshire Libraries and Learning Centres Outreach Projects

  • A village pub that has become a digital learning centre and a hub for the community, giving people new skills as well as combating rural isolation.

    • Has established over 20 UK online cascade centres with a network of partners including Citizens Advice Bureau, Volunteer Centre, North West Therapies, YMCA, Age Concern, Supported Employment, UR Potential, Helath and Wellbeing Centre.

    • The framework is focused on getting all Westminster residents online by end of 2012.  Through activities and events it draws together a series of local projects, voluntary organisations, business, partnerships and other activities. It helps everyone to get the most from their contribution and encourages people to share resources and ideas for the benefit of the local community.

    We are looking for inspiring local community projects that use computers and the internet to help people overcome disadvantage to achieve social change. The best entries will be working closely with a range of partners and individuals to deliver high impact impact in their own community.

    Who was eligible?

    This Award is open to any community-based project, partnership or organisation, including businesses, charities, community groups, public bodies or an individual. The winner will be able to show that they are:

    • meeting a clearly identified need in the community;
    • tackling and helping to overcome specific disadvantage[s];
    • using computers and the internet to achieve social change;
    • innovative, high quality and inspiring;
    • sharable/replicable.
